Printed music is an amazing thing. Like the written word it represents sound and meaning, but it has the added dimension of time. To notate music is one of the joys of my life. I have sat for hours, months, years of my life at the piano with a pencil and blank manuscript slowly filling the page with the notation that will convey the possibility of the music to another person, to communicate the meaning. It is a solitary occupation and one I am able to get completely lost in. I focus on the sound, the rhythms, the texture, the lines, the melody, the harmony, the beautiful chord shapes. Every aspect of the music that I am hearing is represented, colouring the page with the potential of music.
I transcribe; compose; arrange; imagine and create. I tap and count out the beats. I become immersed in the rhythm and set it down. I find the hands, the instruments, the voices communicating. I find the logic and I try to capture it, to allow the three dimensions of sound, meaning and time to sit cleanly on the page. This is what I do ......
